Standard Ashi Garami, uke starts hands up, other leg away, NO SUBS ALLOWED.

Reset if:

  • tori loses foot control
  • you end up not in open guard for 3 seconds
  • y'all are stuck somewhere and tori wants to reset

Goal: control and transitions. Keep tension in uke's leg. This requires hip and ankle control. Goal: pay close attention and discuss afterwards

Instruction: Shotgun Grip for Ashi Garami Control

(5 minutes)

  • elbow deep on the ankle and figure four.
  • elbows in / minimize surface area for defensive grip fighting
  • can be one handed & now the other hand is free to e.g. grip fight, post defensively, keep knee turned out

Instruction: Reverse Butterfly Hook for Ashi Garami Control

(5 minutes)

  • reverse butterfly hook to control distance & maintain tension in uke's leg
    • lateral control with your foot and knee counter pressure
    • given that lateral clamp, you now have push-pull control of uke's leg
  • ideally your other leg is stomping on the hip, with knee turned down

Instruction: Far Hip Control for Ashi Garami Control

(5 minutes)

  • usually relevant if your hips are facing the sky and/or you can't get the hip stomp
  • a. stomp inside uke's far knee / thigh
  • b. ankle grip with free hand & your free leg bent at the knee with shin at the back of uke's knee

Move of the Day

Instruction: Finishing Shotgun Grip Straight Ankle Locks

(5 minutes)

  • Part 1: Adjust the Grip
    • On your side-ish, keep hip and ankle grips & shrimp hips away. This should let you pull your elbow back to uke's achilles. It can catch on uke's heel.
    • Your opposite hand can be cupping uke's upper shin / knee.
    • Final position is uke's heel on/in front of your ribs, not on your side nor behind you!
    • Micro version: straight back shift with figure four grip & feet pushing. Concaving your torso.
  • Part 2: Create Tension
    • Pack your shoulder back and down while keeping feet-on-hip and opp-hand-shin pressure.
    • Stretch everything straight out / hip in a little bit.
  • Part 3: Finish
    • Turn out and belly down arch. Like a big ankle-breaking banana.
