Closed Guard Breaks

Live Positional

(15 minutes)

Pairs, switch top to bottom when the bell rings. Closed guard. Win by scoring points. Top person can win by getting out of closed guard / back.

Sitting Closed Guard Break

  1. Start in top closed guard with good posture, a low base, and armpit or hip/torso frames.
  2. Frame against the inside of one of uke's hips and open your opposite knee.
  3. Frame on the inside of uke's knee that you're opening.
  4. Expand your frames and scoot your other knee to the middle of uke's butt.
  5. Further expand your frames and step up with your outside foot to open uke's guard, or at least make a ton of space.

Standing Closed Guard Break

  1. Frame in uke's armpits.
  2. Pop up to 4 points on your hands and feet.
  3. Posture & hip in hard.
  4. Don't get swept and break the guard.

Notes

  • If you're getting balloon swept, you can stagger your stance instead.
